After Sam Gibson retired from Anderson Clayton, he and his wife Bobbie decided to move closer to their son. They built a small house across the street from him and his family, where they lived until their passing in 1984 and 1989.
In April 2011, a lightning strike ignited a massive wildfire that forever changed our local landscape. The fire burned for 34 days, consuming 148,000 acres and destroying 168 homes. It became the third most destructive wildfire in Texas history. Even after the flames were extinguished, the effects were felt for years, especially in terms of tourism. With fewer visitors, PKRM was shut down. The house has remained largely empty since.
Renovations for the current iteration of Sam’s Place befan in late 2024. We drew as much inspiration as possible from the original owners. Sam and Bobbie, as we planned and restored the camp. Our hope is to share the same joy and peace that so many have experienced here with our new guests.
